Hi there.
We're in the process of renovating the upstairs, and with that, we've chipped away the plaster on one side of the chimney base. We quickly noticed that the bricks weren't as neatly laid as on the unplastered sides, but we didn't think it mattered much (it adds a bit of life to all the perfection).
However, I'm wondering how we can refresh it in a smooth way, so the bricks are completely cleared of the old plaster and the joints become reasonably even? I had an idea to use an angle grinder, for example, but I'm not sure how long a blade will last, do you have any better ideas?
You can use a grout cutter to remove the grout, then regrout with new mortar.
Cleaning the bricks won't be a fun task, but carefully tackle the worst with a chisel, then use mur wash.
You need to take a joint cutter and remove the joints, then reapply with new mortar.
Cleaning the bricks won't be easy, but carefully use a chisel for the worst parts, then a masonry cleaner.
So there's no shortcut? It doesn't need to be exhibition perfect since the bricks aren't sitting perfectly, if you know what I mean.
