My wife claims that you should apply silicone in the pre-drilled hole before inserting a lag screw into the wooden facade. That sounds a bit excessive to me. Does anyone know the standard practice? We are mounting an antenna and a satellite dish.

Me neither. Just go for it!

Avoid PL400, if you use it, you'll never be able to take down the satellite dish.

Oh yes... The PL doesn't make the surrounding fibers any stronger for that... In concrete - maybe. In wood - it probably loosens.

Secure with wing nut and washer.

...or put an o-ring on the screw so no moisture will seep through the thread.

Feels like overkill, but if you have the time and desire to super-optimize then...

...and of course, one should not nail the facade panel either, but use adhesive instead... :P

There is NO need for sealing around a screw in the facade.

Thank you, that was exactly my best argument, the one with the nail in the facade panel. But sometimes it's the same at home as at work, i.e., if I say something, it's questionable whether it's true, but if someone else (preferably a consultant at work) says the same thing, then of course it's true. ;)

Refer to me as "the consultant on the internet." That's fine. ;D

I bought French screws at Bauhaus 8x140. They have a very good ability to snap just when you tighten them at the very last moment. They're expensive too. What do you buy and do you really need to pre-drill the entire length?

8*140 ??? Are you going to hang the house on the antenna??
Or is it far to something that "pulls"?
French bolts are quite weak "between" the threads, at least the smaller dimensions, so maybe that's why...
Maybe use a shorter (& possibly thicker?) bolt instead.
I've mounted many antennas but never broken a bolt.... By the way, brackets are often delivered with 8*50 (which I think is too short..) so go down in length...

I wouldn't mount antennas with my screws without securing a 3" plank. Just joined this "fralletråd" spontaneously. It seems the quality of Bauhaus screws is a bit hit or miss, as they require pre-drilling to prevent snapping right where the thread begins. For about ten per piece, you should get proper screws.

It is obvious that you need to pre-drill before driving in such long French screws as 8*140. If not, the wood you're screwing into is of poor quality.

I used Clas Ohlson's (have you heard that one before? ;)) brackets when I mounted my super cool hallway chair on the wall. However, their brackets are ungalvanized, or at least shiny, which might not be suitable for the satellite dish...
