Hello,

I need to ask if anyone here knows.
I have a house from the 1800s (we think) for which I dug new water and sewage (hand-dug).
The house is on an old torpargrund that later became a crawl space.

About 2 - 3 dm down in the material under the house, there's a coal bed.
The coal bed layer, mixed with sand, is about 1 dm thick.
But there are clearly sharp coal layers in the boundary both above and below.

Otherwise, it's just sand about 1.5 m deep.

Now to my questions:
Was this a common way to lay a foundation?
What function would the coal serve?

Kolstybb was used as insulation and for soundproofing, often mixed with sand.
