Hi, I am going to install horizontal paneling on a summer cottage. It stands on pillars and is probably not entirely straight in construction since it is from the 60s.

When I take a level and go around the house marking where the top edge of the lowest panel board lands if it is level around the house, I end up with a 4cm difference compared to the bottom edge of the house (the sill). That is, on the first board, the board goes a few cm below the sill, while on the last board it goes many more cm below.

I feel I can't have it like that, so the question is if I can raise the panel a little bit for each wall, and how much can I raise the panel to trick the eye into not seeing this when viewing two sides at the same time?

Does anyone have knowledge about this that I don't possess?

Will there be knot boards as well? I think you can move a few cm at least without thinking about it if they are knot boards.

I feel that this won't work, so the question is if I can raise the panel a bit on each wall, and how much could I raise it to trick the eye so it doesn't notice this when viewing two sides at the same time?

I don't understand the problem?

Doesn't the panel cover the sill?

If you put it level, it doesn't matter how crooked the house is, does it?

Only potentially crooked windows would be visible...

Yes, that's my feeling too, even though I only plan to raise about 0.5-1.0 cm/wall.

Strictly speaking, that's true, but since I framed the wall according to the existing wall, there's a bit less nailing batten to attach to (even though it's enough) for the bottom row.
