Hello,

I was wondering if you believe in using 2x120 insulation in a floor joist of 45x220? Will it become too compressed when I lay down the particleboard?

The idea is to be able to put in a 120 insulation, then drill and run water RIR through the center of the floor joist, then add another 120 insulation on top. Then the particleboard and the whole kit.

It feels entirely stupid to put in a 220 insulation and start notching in the joist and reinforcing. After all, you've paid for a 220, so it seems silly to make it "less" :)

How have the rest of you done it?

Use a 120 and a 95 instead. It works fine to compress it as well, but it will be closer to correct with 120+95.

Ahh, the thought crossed my mind too. So simple, really... Then I started worrying about the air gap that will form. If it's not sealed around, there’s a risk of drafts on the floors. Then, as silly as I am, I started considering the risk of turning the floor into a drumskin because of the gap.

Maybe it's time for me to realize that I'm not building an atomic bomb but an extension ;)

would say it gets better with 120+95 if you offset the seams. (of course)
also cheaper!! :)

It's 5mm we're talking about. The insulation is quite elastic. If you compress a 120, it suddenly becomes 70. The studs will shrink several mm in height when they dry out.

All things considered, 5mm makes about 0 difference!

Okay, thanks! Will do that.
