I have a part of the house where I need to replace the floor, and I'm considering what size of joist in the floor structure is needed. I've searched quite a bit but can't find any help anywhere.

It's an area of 6200x4000mm where the joist will be free-hanging at 4000mm.

There's a possibility to place a support beam in the middle, but I'd prefer to avoid that as the space underneath is valuable.

I'd rather not use laminated timber as it increases the cost.

45x220 with glued screwed chipboard is OK up to 4-4.5 meters cc 600mm if I remember correctly. Check http://www.traguiden.se, there's a lot of useful information there.
