Floor for the children's stage

Going to build a small stage in the children's room. Planning to frame it on top of the existing floor, but then I'm unsure what to put on top as stage flooring. The stage floor will be painted, but it must be something that's not too "rough" to walk on, etc.

Would a regular MDF board cut to the right dimensions work well? Or do you have suggestions for something else that might work well?

Other tips and thoughts are of course also welcome.

Put down a mat so you won't have to paint, and it will be less slippery (of course, this depends on the type of mat).
