Hello
I could use some tips on how to secure my freestanding posts to the floor for my new stair railing. I'm a bit worried that it will be unstable at the outer edge.

Any other ideas on how it can be improved are welcome.

3D model of a staircase railing with freestanding posts, requiring advice on stabilizing its base.

The best is if the last post can be screwed into the joist, then it becomes very stable. I have done that on my last post. The attachment is not visible in this picture but I have the same principle on my railing.

Your railing doesn't look very long, and additionally, you have an angle that stabilizes it, so it should be possible to make it steady with simpler methods.

Do you mean something like this? (see image)
The railing is 53 x 94 cm.

I was thinking of putting a window fitting in the 90-degree corner under the top rail.

Steel railing structure, dimension 53 x 94 cm, with a corner window fitting under the top rail, viewed in 3D model.

If the vinkelen is positioned that way, it doesn't serve any purpose. It needs to be rotated 90°.

Moreover, having angles that way won't look nice.

Another way could be if you place the posts on the bottom board and then screw/glue the posts into it, and then screw the bottom board to the floor. The entire railing with posts and spindles can then be assembled before attaching it.

Can't you lower the posts (all) 15-20 cm below floor level and screw them from the outside into the joists?

No, I meant that the railing turns 90 degrees and thereby becomes sturdier than if you just had a straight part. Otherwise, I believe in MB77's idea of attaching the posts to the bottom board and then fastening it to the floor. It's probably the easiest and will be sturdy and good.

I think I'll make them a bit longer and see how it turns out when I've torn a little into the old stuff.

Dowel screw!
Sold at Bauhaus (NOTE: approx. 20cm long in total with a nut in the middle, "wood thread" of course!

Hook bolt for end post installation, approximately 20cm long with a central nut. Use for securing posts to floors. Sold at Bauhaus.

Attached my posts this way (+glue) and the joists lie between the posts. Holds like iron - but mine go through chipboard and down into a stud underneath the chipboard!

Good luck!

A picture of our I was assembling. Maybe not very visible, but anyway...
White painted wooden railing installed by a window in a room with wooden floorboards.

Status update.
This weekend, I got the posts into the floor. I pushed them down to the ceilings and screwed them into the staircase and the side piece in the mortise. It will be rock solid once I get the handrail on.

Now, there remains some routing, trimming, and the handrail.

Newly installed wooden stair railing with vertical posts and a handrail, awaiting finishing touches like trimming and installation of the top rail.

Perfect, that'll fit like a glove
