I'm renovating the bathroom. The old one had lots of mold on the wood paneling on the walls which has now been torn down. Most of it looks pretty good behind there, except for the door frame at the bottom. The shower corner was right next to it, so that's not surprising.

A bit black at the bottom:

Close-up. The wood is slightly softer on the surface facing the room.. Could it be rot fungus?

So to the question.. How do I fix this? Do I have to replace the damaged wood or? It seems tricky or impossible to get it really good unless I remove the frame and spend many hours on this? Am I doing myself a favor if I just replace the whole frame instead?

Scrape off surface mold/surface rot with a paint scraper. Paint. Or, if it is completely rotten, saw it off and use the sawed-off piece as a template. Create a new piece. Install, fill, and paint. The frame is not replaced at this stage.

Should I apply some substance or just remove what is black and/or soft? Maybe one could fill it with plastic padding or something similar then?

You can paint with mold killer, but it seems like overkill to buy a bottle for this small amount. However, if you have some at home, brush it on. No plastic padding, build with carpenter's putty and possibly a piece of träbit.

Have now scraped away the soft part and it was about 1cm deep. :-( So... what do you think, is it easier/faster to replace the frame or should I try to build it up again?

If you're down to healthy wood, carve a replacement piece and glue it in place.

Tried to figure out how I could attach a piece of wood without making it look ugly, but I realized my limitations and bought a new one instead. I'll probably cut off a bit of the bottom of the old door and frame and use it in the basement when I fix it up there. It will probably be perfect...
