I understand that steel beams need to be fireproofed but is it really necessary for a glulam beam? Could it be because I'm replacing a lightweight concrete beam with a glulam beam? Does anyone know more about this?

Often, it is not necessary to fireproof the wood with anything extra; instead, a reduced cross-section in the fire load case is calculated, where the burned parts are removed. This is usually not a problem with low fire resistance classes, such as in the case of houses.
