Hello,

I have a residential house and I am currently building a garage which is connected to the house with a balcony. According to the approved building permit, they are not separate buildings but rather "Building permit for extension of single-family house with garage and balcony" since the structures are connected. I can walk between the "buildings" via the balcony, but I have to go outside. I am now in the process of finishing the interior.

I am now considering the fire protection. I am having a bit of difficulty seeing how now, when the garage is almost complete, I can achieve EI30 in both walls, or EI60 in one wall, which would be the case (I think?) if it were considered as two separate buildings standing next to each other (they are 3 meters apart).

But my hope now is that I wouldn't need to build the exterior walls with any fire rating since the garage and balcony are defined as an extension of the residential house, i.e., an expansion of the volume of the existing single-family house.

What are your thoughts on this, does my hypothesis hold? Of course, I will try to build as fire protected as I can but without having to tear anything down.

No one? 😢
