I've changed the facade at home and am thinking of adding some woodwork details in the gable peaks, I've looked at different roof finials but want something quite simple like my attached picture. But now to my question, what is the best way to attach the different pieces to each other, do you use nail plates on the back or do you use half and half? Has anyone done something similar that has a picture of what it looks like on the back of the finial and how the pieces are attached to each other. /Gustav
A little 10 mm plywood on the back, and then glue and screw, and it should hold together. Paint thoroughly before installation, so the plywood stays in good condition.
Okay, thanks for the response, I'll let the vertical piece down whole and try using either nail plates or plywood to fasten the other pieces together. Toe-nailing can certainly be reinforced further.
My brother's gable ornaments had had their day!
I took it upon myself to make new ones, as I thought he had enough to do with painting the facade, and it was a manageable project alongside my bathroom renovation.
