Hello,

I am working on a balcony and now the railing needs to be installed. There is a metal roof at the bottom and on top is a floating deck on the sheet metal.

The railing is made of regular spruce (not pressure-treated as it will be painted), and the posts used are glulam posts 140x140mm. There should be a total of 4 posts.

How would you attach the posts to the deck? Since the posts are not pressure-treated, it would be good if there is a bit of distance from the deck to better resist rot.
I haven't found any good fixtures for 140mm posts, are there any?
Alternatively, can the posts be placed on a non-absorbing board and angled-screwed into the deck?
Are there other smart solutions for this?

/Anders

  • A wooden deck on a balcony overlooking a lawn, with closely fitted planks above a band-topped base, adjacent to a white building's wall.
  • A wooden balcony deck is shown, elevated on supports above a red metal surface. A single nail is visible on the deck, near a white paneled wall.
I would recommend that you cut out in the decking so you can screw the post onto the side of a joist. Were you thinking of attaching the railing to the wall as well?
