Hi
I have a basement rec room from '64. Considering fixing it up to make it a work-from-home office and social area for the kids. Not for sleeping. It will have some gaming set, TV, and some furniture there.
We haven't seen moisture on the walls/floor or noticed any damp smells.
Should we leave it as is or do we need to address it in some way?
We removed a panel in the wall to see what’s underneath. The house hasn't been drained since it was built, we believe.
We assume the panel contributes to keeping the room somewhat warm. The question is if we'll do ourselves a disservice by tearing it out.
What would you do?

  • Wood-paneled basement wall corner with a removed panel exposing interior, next to a window, highlighting renovation considerations for home office use.
  • Wooden panel partially removed in a basement room to reveal wall structure. Window and snowy outside view visible. Renovation under discussion.
  • Wooden wall paneling and parquet flooring in a basement room, showcasing potential renovation site for home office and play area.
  • Basement room with wooden panel walls, a radiator, and parquet flooring, with a removed panel leaning against the wall revealing interior space.
Does it smell?

It doesn't smell. No one who has visited has said it smells moldy/basement.
