Hello,

House from 1945 with a masonry chimney. Basement and one floor.

Considering building another floor on the house, but then the chimney would have to be extended.

How does that work, and will the existing chimney support the additional weight?

Otherwise, it should be possible to extend the chimney with a metal chimney like Premodul, which doesn't weigh much.

Aha, yes maybe, but preferably I would like to be able to build up the chimney with brick. It's nice and looks period-appropriate if it's brick above the roof even after the roof lift, plus then you have a chimney stack that warms.

So metal chimney in the worst case.

Bring in a master mason to make an assessment. If it's just a simple chimney without any peculiarities, it should probably not be a problem. If there is an open fireplace or something similar that supports the weight of the chimney, it might be trickier.

Hello,
Only chimney stack, no fireplaces. Good tips, thanks.
