There are other ways. You can skip the chipboard and instead glue the floor. Then it doesn't build up quite as much. I don't know if it works better or worse, but that's how we will have it.
 
A thick solid wood floor is not the best for water-based underfloor heating. The denser the material, the better the thermal conductivity. As is well known, solid wood is not as dense as, for example, laminate.
