We have a rather exciting solution in our home. Now it must be addressed in some way. Hoping for material tips from you =)
We have (see picture) a fairly large hole in the floor/ceiling between the floors. Very impactful, and the purpose is to get the light DOWN from the skylights upstairs and get the heat UP from the stove downstairs. However, as you can see in the picture, it is very easy to just fall straight down. Since we have children in the house and I myself am a "night walker" :S we're afraid to leave the hole open. We are now considering whether we could install some plexiglass or tempered glass, or if you have any other suggestions. The question is: Can holes be made in these materials? We're thinking of something that allows heat to go up. I understand that plexiglass gets easily scratched? This isn't a place where people usually walk, but it needs to hold if someone were to "accidentally" walk over the hole.
If anyone has tips or ideas, they are greatly appreciated. Also if you know the price per square meter or so.

Using glass is also possible, but it often becomes very expensive as laminated and tempered glass is required. Making holes for air passage in this I believe will be very difficult to achieve in the glass, but can always be arranged in the surrounding frame.

I wouldn't put anything over the hole but would invest in hardened glass walls around it, which don't go all the way up and leave a gap at the bottom. Depending on the rest of the house's style that is... maybe a nice, handmade wrought iron trellis...
