Hello,
Has there been an inflation in using pressure-treated wood in all constructions? Regular wood that is painted also has quite good resistance, right? For example, I see people building grill benches or similar things and insist on using treated wood. Shouldn't regular painted wood be enough here? Is it just laziness or convenience? How is the environment affected?

That could be the case, or perhaps the carpenter just chose the cheapest option in the desired dim.

I like pine and how it ages more than spruce and it often gets pressure treated...

If exposed to the elements, paint can make it worse. So painted wood is not generally a good solution.

My personal opinion is the ease of not having to paint, and that the gray appearance is and has been trendy, if you will. But painting works just fine, just more maintenance😉

I guess it's fine to paint on the printed part too if you want?

Yes, but not the first year, it needs to dry for a season.

It is also fine to build with untreated spruce and refrain from painting/oiling. Build so the wood can dry after rain for it to last.

Yes, that's kind of what I mean. How long does regular timber last? Especially if you paint/treat it. There are lots of details in painted wood on the house that hold up well...

Best answer

Choose timber carefully at the lumberyard.
It doesn't matter much if you choose pressure-treated or not with today's pressure-treated wood.
Straight, slow-grown without knots, maintain with oil or tar etc.
Feel free to put plastic feet on tables, chairs, etc.
Put it away in the fall and let it stand in a well-ventilated area without sunlight on it.
The sun's rays affect the wood and shorten its lifespan, where paint helps, but it peels and retains moisture instead.
