Hello

We are planning to build a front step for the house and wanted to see if you could help with some questions.
The idea is to attach a beam to the house facade and then have a landing and a few steps.

But to my questions, is it enough to build the wooden structure directly on the ground without any concrete piers, or would you cast piers for the small landing that will be added?

Another question I have is, if we drop something through the gaps that will be present, how do we retrieve it?
On our other decks, we have integrated hatches that are not visible, but here I'm not sure how it would work?

The third question is more aesthetic, would you make a half-moon step like in the red picture below, or would you rather make a staircase that goes straight down like we have today, with a railing on the side?

  • Concrete entry stairs with a white railing leading to a house door, surrounded by gravel. A broom is leaning against the wall, and two cats are on the steps.
  • Red wooden house with yellow door, white-trimmed windows, and semi-circular wooden entrance steps. Surrounded by flower pots, chairs, and green foliage.
Build a large staircase with a substantial landing outside the door, as in the picture. If you can, integrate a grate into the landing so it's possible to scrape off shoes. The staircase can be constructed loosely in the garage or under a roof and then placed on site. The roof, which is not shown in the picture, can probably be supported with braces to avoid having the post in the way.

Good luck.
