I'm getting help to build a fence/wall against the neighbor.
As it stands right now, it has been built with a 45x45 horizontal with vertical boards above it, where the end grain is against the 45x45. My objection was that all the water running down onto the 45x45 will be absorbed by the end grain, but the carpenter says it doesn't even need to be painted as it will be built in.
This is how it looks now:
And a board will be placed outside like this:
We probably want the 45x45 to be removed so that it can be maintained "from underneath" and water doesn't accumulate there.
It seems like there will be a gap between the horizontal board and the vertical ones, where debris and moisture will collect. It spontaneously feels like the end grain will take a lot of damage then!
Maybe complement with a narrow slanted board on top of the lower one. Flush against the standing ones. Which then covers the gap. Like
We've already thought about that. There will be a triangular strip there!
We've also agreed that the standing ones should not go all the way down to the underlying beam, i.e., better ventilation and then we can oil in there. Should be good, I think.
