We're planning to put up some boards on the way up a staircase and in a hall where the stairs begin. Today there is paneling, and underneath the paneling, there's just timber. We're considering putting up some boards on the wall that we can then wallpaper, but I don't think plasterboard would work well since they are so fragile, and considering how cramped it is, it's easy to end up with holes in the plaster. So, I need tips on durable boards that are preferably easy to work with and can be wallpapered?

Plaster probably works. Wallpaper and paint also provide strength. Otherwise, there are more durable boards like fibercement boards.
