Drywall: attach to the studs or to the drywall?
Hello!
I'm planning to put up 2 shelves on a drywall, and the idea is to have books on them. Now I'm wondering, what is the best way, to attach the brackets to the metal studs (I have a scanner, so I've found and marked them) with sheet metal screws or directly into the drywall with something like molly/expander, anchor screws, drywall anchors, or toggles?
I visited Bauhaus and Clas Ohlson the other day and asked there, but at one place they recommended the studs and at the other, they said to avoid the studs and attach directly to the drywall with expanders... I've also googled like crazy and haven't found a clear answer.
It's single drywall, with studs every 450 mm and the brackets are Pythagoras Maze brackets, attached at three points (https://royaldesign.se/pythagoras-konsol-2-pack#/166252). My original thought was to put two screws in the metal stud with self-drilling screws (considering pre-drilling) and attach the third point with an anchor screw in the drywall. The shelves were intended to be 900 mm long (adjusted to the studs) and 200 mm deep, and I was planning to have four brackets per shelf, but if it turns out you're not supposed to attach to the metal studs, the shelves might be a bit longer.
I'd prefer to avoid expanders since they seem to do the most damage to the wall (I live in a rental), but I have both anchor screws and expanders at home.
So my questions are, is it a good idea to attach to the studs and if you're attaching to the drywall, what's best to use then?
