We are going to build a kind of entrance roof construction similar to a patio roof in the size of about 6m x 1.5m, which we will attach to the wall on one side and rest on four posts on the other side. I have bought expansion bolts and now I wonder if we should drill into the bricks or into the mortar on our brick house to be able to attach the ledger to the wall. What holds best?

In general, you obviously drill into the brick if you're using plugs. The joint can offer significantly less strength as it can be porous. However, is there a risk of cracking in the brick with expansion bolts? Since you have the option and don't seem to have plaster on the brick, I wonder if it's facade brick you have. How deep is it then, maybe it affects the fastening?

I don't think expanders are the best choice for fastening in brick. I usually use nail plugs in the size 10 x 100 if I'm going to fasten a 45 mm stud.

Green plastic plug (for 12mm)

Then French timber screw.

Expander bolt will not work, ;(

Exactly, we have brick houses (plaster brickwork, that is) and we have always used plugs/screws or nail plugs (the carpenters like these for baseboards, etc., I don't use them myself). Never expansion bolts except for concrete foundations.

If you want an M-thread/bolt for flexible mounting (how often will you want to dismantle the screen though ), you can drill, inject anchor mortar, and then press in the M-thread rod, it holds well in brick. Or use a plug with a screw and washer/nut, see attached image. Biltema has them in M10x100.

  • Dual-thread screw stud M10x100 with one end threaded for masonry and the other for nuts; suitable for securing items in a brick wall.
