Yes, that's not how you install a frame unless there's a very special reason.
 
I arranged it so that I could put door trim as a cover for the wood underneath. Didn't have the energy to keep moving the frame back and forth. Maybe it's not the prettiest, but better anyway, right?

Yes, the door is on the wrong side of the door frame....

Then you need a "smyg", you can buy pre-painted ones, or alternatively use a trim (like 21x33 in your case). They often need to be cut to length to fit, and you can also compensate if it's crooked (the frame should always be plumb, the wall can tilt).

Yeah, it works, but it does hurt the eyes a bit for those of us who know how it should have been done :D
