door opening (portal) and door casing
Hello!
New to both the forum and the whole renovation scene, so please have patience with a rookie!
Straight to my problem.
I have two door openings leading to the kitchen where unfortunately it didn't turn out too nicely after repainting the entire townhouse. On one hand, the paint seems to have peeled off in some places, and on the other, there is a small damage on one spot of the actual door frame.
However, I have no idea how the actual opening/door frame is constructed (built in '04).
My first idea was to put new door frames (mdf) on top of what is currently there and then add trim around to tidy it up.
Will this work?
How is it built from the beginning? What is the material that peels off so easily? filler/plaster?

You can plaster in steel edges and then repaint, and then paint 5-10 cm out on the wall with a straight edge. It will probably be nice, neat, and durable, and also quite similar to the original.
Your idea could also work, if you want to make the openings a few cm smaller with your mdf and if you think you can attach the moldings to the plaster..

But I'm unsure if it's plaster, when you touch the damage it feels more crumbly somehow and you can't paint directly on plaster and get a smooth surface like this, can you?
So the question is whether it's plaster or something else? Gypsum?
I’m not very good at this.. maybe it's hard to tell via picture too. Adding a picture where only the "paint" has come off this material, whatever it may be..
