Hello
I have a log that I plan to cast into the ground & use as a post for a basketball hoop. But it has three hollowed-out holes in it. So the question is if it will become skewed because of these. Plugging with wood feels like too big of a project. Should one fill the holes with something like concrete?
All wood can warp. However, casting concrete in the holes will likely only worsen the problems since it will not move in the same way as the wood.
The best option is probably to split it lengthwise, turn them over, and screw them back together, as they will counteract each other's forces a little better.
But the best option is probably *not* to cast it in concrete, but instead cast a post bracket.
Then you can mount it there, and if it warps, it's easy to replace it.
Additionally, you avoid the problem of a buried post rotting.
