Hi!

Yet another thread about this...

I'm in the process of removing plastic and linoleum flooring in the basement. In the last room where the linoleum was, there's some kind of paper underneath followed by something black between the paper and the concrete. See pictures.

It smells sharp, I feel like it smells like tar.

The house was built in 1976.

What do you advise me to do? The plan is to grind down the concrete floor and lay tiles.

By the way, in the rest of the basement where there was plastic flooring, there was a beige-like glue, smelled a bit "minty" kind of. Heard that the stuff can be found in more glues than just black glue.

What is characteristic of asbestos glue, can I do any conclusive checks myself or do I have to send in samples?

  • Close-up of a floor with layers peeling, revealing black tar-like substance between paper and concrete. Used in a discussion about floor renovation and potential asbestos.
  • Black tar-like substance and paper-like material under linoleum flooring, possibly emitting a tar odor, removed from a basement in a 1976 house renovation.

It smells strong, makes me think it smells like tar.

The house was built in 1976.

What do you advise me to do? The plan is to sand down the concrete floor and lay tiles.

By the way, in the rest of the basement where there was plastic flooring, there was a beige-like adhesive, smelled a bit "minty" type. I've heard this stuff can be present in more adhesives than just black adhesive.

What is characteristic of asbestos adhesive, can one do some of their own exclusionary checks or do I need to send in samples?
The only way to determine is analysis.

The black stuff looks like something asphalt-like and such has been used approximately as waterproofing.

There are linoleum mats that contain asbestos.

Is probably intended as a waterproofing layer and likely does not contain asbestos. The adhesive is not the biggest asbestos risk with vinyl floors from the early 1970s. Many vinyl floors had a backing layer of almost pure asbestos (chrysotile asbestos paper). It creates a lot of dust when torn.

Chrysotile is what it should be, not chrysolite.

Update in retrospect: The glue did NOT contain asbestos after analysis. To others reading and wondering about the same thing: Submit sample(s) if you're worried and spare yourself uncertainty and anxiety.
