Hi,

I'm renovating an apartment built in the mid-70s. The vinyl flooring in the kitchen is glued down with some yellow adhesive. I know that asbestos fibers can be present in black mastic, but this is concrete and some yellow adhesive that remains after the flooring is removed. Does anyone know what it is? Can I continue the demolition or does the whole thing need to be sanitized?

  • Peeling kitchen floor with yellow adhesive residue from 1970s renovation project.
If you're worried, get tests done. It's not something a forum can answer with the help of a rather poor picture :D

BUT..... it's hardly asbestos.

I replaced a similar plastic mat in our house, built in '75. A piece was then sent for analysis where it turned out that there was asbestos in the mat itself, not in the glue. If it can be seen with a trained eye, I don't know.

Took some better pictures now. Hard to see, but what are the odds that it's built with asbestos if you know what I mean

  • Partially removed floor tiles with visible underlayment and dust, questioning potential asbestos presence.
  • Dusty floor near wooden paneling, possibility of asbestos questioned.
  • Broken floor tiles and debris in a corner of a room, with concerns about potential asbestos content.
As mentioned, pictures don't really do anything, but now you're almost finished with the job and dust should be dealt with even if it's not asbestos, as it's hazardous to health, so just start wet wiping.
