I was wondering if anyone knows what this is; it was installed in the entire ceiling of the boiler room, I've assumed it's some form of sound absorber.

It looks like high-density stone wool, probably Rockwool.
Looks like regular stone wool, type "markskiva."
Yeah, it is very compact and "heavy"
