Hello,

I have built a fence and it's now time to install gates. The first will be at the main entrance and since it's my first time making a fence (& gate), I have a few questions that have come up.

The fence in this section consists of vertical pressure-treated (A) posts with dimensions of 70x70 mm and horizontal pressure-treated (AB) boards with dimensions of 22x145 mm attached on the outside. The width of the gate will be about 100-110 cm.

The idea is for the frame to consist of standing 45x95 battens (since that was what was available at the time of purchase) with a diagonal batten between the upper and lower edge, giving a Z-shaped impression. On top of this are the same type of boards as the rest of the fence on both sides. I plan to use "surface-mounted" hinges.

Question 1)
Considering the depth of the fence, I think it's important to consider the distance between the gate and the fence to be able to open/close the gate. On one side, I think surface-mounted hinges instead of hinges centered directly on the post will help. On the other side, I estimate a gap of 10 mm is plenty to allow opening/closing. Am I right?

Question 2)
Since it's quite a substantial gate where the idea is that the entire weight is supported by the hinges, I think it places some demands on durability. Any tips on how to navigate the choice of hinges?

Question 3)
Aesthetically, is it a good idea to perhaps try to get more 70x70 mm posts instead of 45x95 mm battens? I'm thinking along these lines because the boards will be mounted exactly the same as on the fence and the gate will therefore not differ significantly in appearance. I'm considering the risk that 45x95 mm and the lesser total depth might make it look messy.

If anything is unclear, I can clarify. Thanks in advance!
