I'm going to install a new ceiling in my garage and am wondering if the direction of the studs behind the drywall has any significance? Whether they run along the long side of the sheet or along the short side of the sheet.

Well, not really since you're spacing at 300c/c. However, there's no reason to do anything other than to space along the long side of the gypsum.

Well, I get the idea that it's better for the long side joint to "hang in the air" at times than for the short side joint to do so.

I will have 2 layers of studs, first 60 cc one length and then 30 cc the other length. This is for wiring and space for downlights. I want the plasterboards in a certain direction to get as few seams as possible (less to fill and cut).

The wiring will run along the long sides of the plasterboards and this makes it particularly desirable for the last layer of studs to go along the short side of the plasterboard as you can easily place all the electrical pipes on the last layer of studs.

Doesn't seem to make much of a difference since 30 cc and the boards cc are almost the same.
