We need to install a new fence along our side facing a bike path. The length will be about 35 meters.

We are thinking of a fence with horizontal slats and a gate. The gate divides the fence into approximately 20 + 15 meters. We plan to use an earth auger and set the post shoes in concrete. The distance between the posts is planned to be 150 cm.

We have deer and roe deer nibbling in the garden and I want to limit their access... Therefore, we are considering setting posts that are 180 cm high with a top rail, but only making the slats up to a maximum of 120 cm. The reason is simply that we need a building permit if we set slats full height, have already checked with the municipality. We thought about supplementing with reinforcement mesh and placing climbing plants in some of the "gaps" that will be created.

My first question is what dimension of posts is appropriate for this length of fence? We want it to stand stable.

The second question is if it will look strange if we frame it this way? The idea with the top rail is partly to make it more difficult for the animals to jump over.

If anyone has made a similar fence, please feel free to link images for inspiration.

I think it will look good, especially if some sections have trellis.

Keep in mind that the fence will take significant lateral forces. Do not use post shoes but rather two concrete supports for each post, and drill proper holes.
