Hello!
I am starting to feel like building a balcony over part of our patio. Today, there's a small balcony that will be demolished and replaced with a larger one. It will be built in a corner of the house, so there will be two attachment points on the wall. The width is planned to be 5100mm and the depth will be 2700mm. I only want one post in the outer corner of the balcony, so there will be a support beam with a span of 5100mm. Is a laminated beam with dimensions 90x315 sufficient as a support beam, and a laminated post measuring 115x115 in the outer corner?

Drawing of a planned balcony with dimensions 5100mm by 2700mm, indicating a single support post at the corner, height 2500mm.

Sunny greetings, Lars

90x315 should suffice. I haven't calculated the deflection, but a useful load of 3.5 kN/sqm plus a snow load of 3 kN/sqm is in itself an actual over-dimensioning. The post can be 90x90.

Hi, I have a similar project, a balcony in an inside corner with a post. 4 m span and 3 m depth. I wonder if I could use two 45x220x4000 construction timber for the load-bearing beam? If two 45x220x4000 aren't sufficient, would 56x315x4000 be enough, or what dimensions for a load-bearing beam do you think I should use?

Double 45x220 is not enough. Glulam 56x315 is insufficient considering the beam is outdoors. I suggest 78x315 instead.

Thanks for the answer, will 66x315x4000 do? That's what I can get around here. Otherwise, it will be something to special order.

It won't fall down but it's slightly short. If you order it, you can get it in the right length, otherwise, the stock version is usually 6 m long.

Ok, thanks so much. I already bought a 90x315 but find it a bit cumbersome to handle. I can get a 66x315 from a friend, hence my question.

90x315 is much better. Use it.

Thanks for the quick response, I will probably order then. Have a nice evening.

One more question, I'm planning to use studs 3000x195x45 with a spacing of 60cm. I wonder if 195 studs are sufficient, or do I need to go with 220 mm?

I would use 45x220. 45x195 becomes unnecessarily wobbly with a 3-meter span on a balcony.

Thank you for the answer. Have a nice evening now.

Hello, I have now decided to expand the area of the balcony. I'm wondering what type of outer beam I should use. Please see the picture. Thanks for all the responses. Floor plan of a balcony extension with dimensions and beam placements, featuring a highlighted "stolpe 90x90" support post detail on the side.

I suggest glulam 90x270 for the outer beam. Double 45x220 is not enough.

I was recommended to use 270X90 for my load-bearing beam that carries a lot more than the outermost one will. Thanks anyway for the answer.
Have a great day.
