We have a terrace that is 63cm high. It's time to build a proper staircase and not just have the provisional one we've had for five years.

We feel that it will become too deep/take up too much space on the stone path if we make it 3-steps, but with two steps, it will be quite tall steps.

Wooden deck with two-step stairs leading to a paved path; scooter and deck chair visible.

What should we consider? Would you make a staircase that can be accessed from all directions or with stringers?

Three steps measure 210mm, which is not optimal for an outdoor staircase.

  • Outdoor stairs diagram showing step height measurements, noting three steps totaling 210mm, and highlighting optimal measurements.
"Normal" step height is 170-180, step depth 250-280. Step height over 210 becomes "steep."

630/3=210 (2 steps like today) 630/4=157.5 (3 steps)

2 steps with a step depth of 280 take a total depth of 560.

Ikea's step stool, "Bekväm" has step heights of 245 and 225 respectively.

Thanks for a good answer. Am I interpreting you correctly if I think you suggest going with 3 steps?

Nice drawing!! Sketchup?

158mm seems to be the best option. In terms of timber, do you buy 140 and cut it down to 130 in length? What is the best practice here? Does anyone know?
