We have built a deck on two levels and initially thought we would have anchor points for the sunshade on the upper level. Then we realized that it would have been even better on the lower level, but since we didn't put a high post in the corner as a potential anchor point we're now considering the best way to proceed.

The picture shows the deck and the rings indicate where the anchor points should be. I think the sail should slope down towards the corner of the deck. The other three anchor points are approximately 250 cm above the decking and the railing is about 110 cm high, so thinking that the anchor point should be about 100 cm above the railing.

What do you think is the best solution to handle the load from a 4 x 3 m sunshade while (as little as possible) not detracting from the deck's appearance? Have considered screwing a 70x70 post onto the existing one (which is 95x95) or possibly using some kind of metal pipe.

  • Corner of a wooden deck with railing, showing potential attachment points for a sunshade sail. The deck is surrounded by grass and trees.
I would replace the existing one with a taller pole. Screw eyes directly into the pole hold. The fabric is what will break first, so make it easy to unhook in windy weather.

How much do you need to tension the sail for it not to sag and get in the way?

I didn't have any posts to put in, and the house side was quite low so I had to tension mine significantly.

That pole is quite firmly fixed so I would preferably avoid trying to replace it.

  • Wooden deck corner with firmly secured post on a concrete base, surrounded by grass.
