Hello everyone,

I've been away for two weeks, and when I came back, I discovered a 1.5-meter-long vertical crack (2-3 mm wide) in a corner of the bedroom! The room is on the second floor (below is the garage). The room was newly wallpapered (3 months ago). The house is a two-story wooden house on a concrete slab. I wonder what the cause might be? Is it dangerous? How do you repair it?

Grateful for all answers and comments (I'm a bit worried).

How old is the house?
It probably depends on the settling of the house. It's just the wallpaper that's cracked, right?

I have that problem.
I only have plywood and fabric on the walls. (no plasterboard) As a carpenter, I should know that living materials move.
Being lazy, one convinces oneself that "it will probably be fine" A bit clumsy!
Of course, the wallpaper cracked at all the sensitive joints (door frames, etc.).

The house is from 1961. We bought it 4-5 months ago! The room was previously wallpapered, we removed all the old wallpaper, patched where needed, applied problem solver, and painted. What I can see is that the actual corner between wall A and wall B is not 100% sealed (I believe both A and B are chipboards). Some kind of plaster/spackle fills the opening between A and B, and it's the plaster and paint that have cracked.

I don't think you need to worry more than about the wallpapering itself. It is quite a common occurrence. Everything moves. It can be anything from wind, snow on the roof, frost, etc., etc.

No worries. Since this is a corner, it usually doesn't matter much if it's particle board or gypsum board, but generally, there's a higher risk of cracks in the wallpaper with particle board. We had a wall that previous owners added to a 60s house using particle board (the rest are sparse paneling + gypsum board), which caused cracks both in the corner and the wall itself. They also placed the seams vertically in line with a door frame. After an attempt with extra paper strips and new wallpaper, which cracked again the following winter, we took a new approach. Now, there are gypsum boards installed according to all the rules, and the cracks have been a thing of the past for over 10 years. But it's usually only an aesthetic issue, so if you can live with the crack in the corner, you don't need to do anything.

As mentioned, everything is moving. And we have noticed that since we got the heating sorted at home (or maybe other simple changes like your way of living being different from the previous owner's) the material is moving.

I always apply a bead of latex caulk in the corners, but then I almost always paint. I don't like wallpaper. I don't even like the idea of having a pattern on the walls. It gives me carnival associations! No, calm colors and maybe spice it up with a colorful painting.

But now it was about cracks... :)

I've cheated a bit with one of the corners that cracked. I pressed up a feature wall with wallpaper and finished with a quarter-round in the corner. It looks great as a finish to the feature wall and nothing else.

Thanks for all the answers! I think I'll have to use latex sealant in the corners and repaint! It's boring, but that's how it is when you're a beginner :(.

Even professionals experience cracks, or where you have done everything by the book, so it's not just a beginner's problem. Houses move and you can never be completely sure in advance; it can crack after a month or after x years, so there are no guarantees.
Good luck.
