We discovered cracks between the basement stairs and the wall. The stairs are made of wood and the wall is concrete blocks. Not so surprising perhaps, and there should have been a soft joint in the seam.

However, the cracks have not been visible before but seem to have appeared quite recently and, in our opinion, in a short period of time.

Has the wood in the stairs dried after more wood burning than usual? Has the house settled in a corner, then the stairs should move as much? No cracks in the foundation wall or brick facade.

Many have probably noticed new cracks this winter. Above all, wood expands and contracts significantly as humidity drops or rises. Install new molding that sits outside the fabric, attached to the staircase, so the staircase can move without it becoming too noticeable.
