I hope someone here can offer some smart tips and advice about our balcony. The balcony is a steel structure with decking where the joists are screwed into the steel construction.

Under the decking, plastic has been laid, and under the plastic/surface layer on the underside of the balcony is some form of plywood with a slight slope away from the house.

The plywood has now become seriously water-damaged, swollen, and delaminated.

The first thing to do is pretty simple, remove the plywood and plastic. But what should I do next,

Leave it open under the decking so rainwater comes down onto the terrace below?

Install some form of metal roofing on the underside of the balcony? Is there a risk that the joists will rot since they may have difficulty drying after rain and snow?

Another solution?
