Maybe you can saw a circle with the next size of the hole saw and glue it in.

Take the piece you sawed off and screw a wood piece or equivalent underneath so it can get support from below and glue in the sawed-out piece (or make a new one). Mix glue and sawdust to increase the volume and density 
Is it to kill the hole (it shouldn't be there)
Insert a strip into the hole so it goes across behind it, and after that apply wood glue inside.
When it has dried, mill out a circle with a router and glue it against the wood piece. When it's dried, you can fill the seam with some glue.
A tip when you are lowering the piece, insert a long screw in it so you can't drop it and also clamp it against the underside in some way.
