Tongue and groove boards are often made so that you have a gap on one side at the joint, so maybe that's what determines it?

It depends on whether you want the planed or the sawn side facing the room.
I would think it's a bit hit or miss which side is planed.

Depends on what is to be done on the outside, plasterboard, paint, stain, untreated, etc., but also how the råspont is sawn/planed. The result of what is called råspont differs from sawmill/planing mill in surface texture depending on the machinery. So the question is not according to me "core side".:D:cool:
