Hello,

I have an older self-supporting, curved staircase that I'm considering renovating. Today, the staircase is closed, but we want it open for light.

On the "narrow" side of the stairs, both the treads and risers are attached to a post, while on the wider side, they are attached to a more traditional stringer. My idea is to mill one or two grooves in the stringer, under the treads, to install a flat bar running under the tread and attached to the post...

The marks or scars from the risers in the stringer won't look very nice, but it might be possible to fill them in with gypsum or similar. It might be worse with the post and the attachments there, but I'm considering if I can cover the post in some way...

What do you think, does anyone have experience removing the risers from an old staircase?
