I’m planning to build a pergola on part of the deck and have some questions about the construction. I’m attaching a picture below to make it a bit clearer.
Where we have a railing with 90x90 posts, I was thinking they would become the corners for the pergola. The problem is what to do with the 90x90 post that’s already there. It would need to be a meter or so higher. Replacing the post with a longer one would mean I have to tear down the fence and remove the deck's support beams that are attached to the 90x90 post in the fence. Just placing it directly on top wouldn't work at all, of course. Placing a new 90x90 post next to it on the inside or outside of the fence wouldn’t look good. But how about attaching, say, two 145x45 on each side of the 90x90 post and then putting a new 90x90 post on top of the fence?
Then do the same on the other side. But there, I’ll lift up the decking and attach a new 90x90 post to the ground and put 145x45 on the sides.
The 145x45 should then support a large part of the construction on one side. But is it sufficient, and will it look sensible?
I actually don't know how close they should be. It should be enough so that plants can climb over, but you can always help with a net or something similar. Are there any good guidelines on how many beams you can have per meter or something similar? The best would be to just have 2 posts, but I don't know what the limitation is there either. There will hardly be any load apart from the beams themselves.
