I'm in the middle of renovating, and the first real unpleasant surprise came up with the persistent rain.
I have a kitchen entrance on the gable of the house one meter up from the ground. Directly below is a basement door. I have drawn up the construction, and it might be clear what the problem is. The top level of the poured concrete stairs is higher than the wooden sill resting on top of the basement wall. Additionally, there seems to be no slope to speak of. The threshold has essentially acted as a dam, and after 50+ years, the moisture has taken its toll. The threshold, sill, and the top side of the basement door frame are basically sand and need to be rebuilt in a proper way. But I can't find a good solution for the connection between the concrete stairs and the foundation wall.
I gratefully welcome any suggestions on how to achieve a moisture-proof construction so that I don't have to redo this in a few years.
