Hello everyone on the Byggahus forum.
I'm seeking your opinions and suggestions for some dilemmas.

I plan to hang a 13kg mirror with only one mount on a brick wall, and it will be hung above a wainscoting that is about 1.7m up along the wall. The wainscoting has a "ledge" at the top that the mirror must extend beyond, which means the screw needs to protrude about 7cm from the wall for the mirror to hang properly (see image 1).

Image 2 (my simple drawing) shows the approximate idea for the mounting.

Do you think a screw that's 15cm long and 4mm in diameter will be sufficient if I use a wall plug and expanding glue? (See screw image 4)

My next question is that the screw head is larger than what fits into the mirror's mounting (image 4). What do you think about trying to grind down the screw head by 4mm so that it fits? And how would be the best way to grind it down? Unfortunately, I haven't found any screw that is longer, has a larger diameter, but a smaller screw head...

Thanks for the help! I've asked ChatGPT but don't fully trust the answers. I want to avoid this crashing down onto the floor in a month's time...

  • A measuring tape extends from a wall over a decorative panel edge, showing approximately 13 cm from the wall surface.
  • Drawing of a wall cross-section showing mirror hanging on a bracket above a ledge, with a screw extending into a brick wall.
  • A long metal screw with a flat head, lying on a wooden surface, used in a project to mount a heavy mirror on a brick wall.
  • Red panel with a keyhole slot on the back for wall mounting. A visible screw near the slot, used for hanging purposes.
I would place the suspension screw in a suitable beam, passing through with a countersunk nut and washer on the inside. Then screw the beam into the brick wall with 2-3 screws. It will be steady.

I would probably have recessed it into the panel rather than hung it on the outside

Interesting. So screw a wooden beam into the wall with, for example, three screws, and then hang the mirror with a hook on it? Am I interpreting that correctly?

Yes

Alternatively, screw/glue a piece of wood onto the back of the mirror that sticks out as long as the ledge on the panel, attach a new keyhole and then a screw in the wall!

It's a shame you have that panel heel. It seems to be insanely in the way.

Now hung up with a wooden batten that I drilled into the wall with two screws and then attached the mirror with a screw into the wooden batten. Thanks for the great tips!

Then a new question arises. The hole for hanging the mirror is so small that I had to use a smaller screw to make it fit. This meant that I only used a screw that is just over 5cm long and 4mm thick. So now the mirror hangs on the screw where 3cm is screwed into the wooden batten and 2cm sticks out, with the 13kg mirror hanging on the end.

ChatGPT writes that it should work, but I want to double-check if you agree. If you're unsure, please express that.

Thanks for all the help.

  • A 5cm screw partly inserted into a wooden stud holding a mirror, with labeled measurements showing 3cm in the stud and 2cm protruding.
I would have attached a shorter and narrower piece of regel onto the regel mounted in the wall, thus filling the space between the regel and the mirror, and then screwed the hanging screw into it. The risk is that this solution might give way over time!

Or switch to a longer screw. There are long screws with a small head.
