Hello

I have now received X number of pallets with form blocks that are to be cast on a concrete base. The wall being built will be about 160cm high, and the form blocks are stacked like Lego before being filled with mortar. My idea was to pin the vertical reinforcement to the 15 cm thick concrete base by drilling 10 cm deep holes with a diameter of 16mm and placing in 12mm reinforcement secured with fine expanding concrete. Weber EXM702.

Now to my concern.

The expanding concrete, which is fine and very fluid, will find its way down into the holes I drill for the reinforcement, but also into the edges of the form blocks, covering all holes where any moisture might seep out. My concern now is that I will have a full-height stacked wall with a lot of rainwater at the bottom before the pouring. Even worse if it freezes just north of Stockholm and the water expands and cracks the bottom form blocks.

Is it enough to just cover the top of the wall with a tarp for now? The reinforcement bars are sticking up before everything is completed!

You don't need to fill the drilled holes with so much expanding concrete that it overflows. You can also use some type of adhesive in the holes like Hilti-hit or similar from other manufacturers. Then the risk is small that you'll need to seal anything. If there is remaining water that hasn't frozen, it doesn't matter much when you then pour the concrete. The risk is if it freezes because then there will be a void after the frozen water when the concrete has set and the water has thawed.

Sure!

Technically correct, but considering the rain and all the extra work involved in carefully cleaning the hole before using adhesive in a tube, I thought I'd take the easier, cheaper, and faster route with expanding concrete. I also feel that it could be an advantage to seal the block before it is finally filled.

I’m thinking of applying a layer of EXM702 at the bottom, about 10mm thick.

Maybe I should be a bit more careful with the amount of expanding concrete so that I only try to fill the holes.
