I have bought a batch of used cobblestones from a private seller.
When I received the delivery, I noticed that all the stones have bitumen residues on them.
It seems like the stones were once glued to the surface with bitumen.
My question is, is there any effective way to clean the stones?

Diesel is good for removing bitumen
Thick residues are chipped away with a cheap bricklayer's hammer, e.g., http://www.harald-nyborg.se/murhammare.html, preferably with a steel shaft and like in the picture, wide scoop. By shortening the handle, you get a perfect setter's hammer! Thin discolorations have to be worn away (the ravages of time/car driving).
The stone hasn't been glued to the substrate but has been asphalted over, which means you most likely have Swedish cobblestone, congratulations. You probably also have a worn surface under the bitumen residues, so you know which side is the top. When stone streets are asphalted over today, a thin layer of sand is sprinkled on to avoid cleaning the stone if one chooses to restore it later.
