Hello.

In our old house, we have a pine staircase that is not built according to today's standards. The steps are quite narrow, and the rise between them is a bit higher than it should be. The staircase has no risers, but we want it to be closed. I initially thought of adding risers, but given the staircase's unusual dimensions, that won't work well. Instead, I'm thinking about buying some sheet material and attaching it to the stringers on the underside of the staircase. What do you think it will look like? Has anyone tried this? Will it look odd?

It should work. It will be easier and less likely to stub your toes if you place a rib/list at the far end under the step and then attach the board to that list from behind.

I'm going to think about it! Thanks for the tip!
