Faced with the choice of whether to have clay or concrete on the roof, pros & cons?
We don't want that shine that some tiles have. It's going to be a black roof :D

Black brick is enamelled. It is relatively expensive and glossy. If you want matte black, I would go for concrete.

Concrete is cheaper and heavier = stable. It comes in different finishes, so if you want semi-matte black or glossy, you just choose. Brick is said to last longer, but I don't know how long the more modern surface-treated concrete tiles last?

Regardless of which one you choose, the tiles are likely to last longer than the pappen.

With a roof made of clay tiles, it's the underlayment that determines the lifespan. With the right choice of materials (underlayment, batten dimensions, and nail quality) and a decent roof pitch (≥ 30 degrees), one can expect 70 years. After a re-roofing, the clay tiles can be reused. With a roof made of concrete tiles, it's the concrete tiles that determine the lifespan. Based on my experience, a realistic estimate is about 40 years. After a re-roofing, the tiles have to be discarded. The reason concrete tiles don't last longer (i.e., lose their function) is that the fine-grained surface slowly erodes, exposing a coarse-grained concrete. This then becomes a good base for various growth. Proximity to forests and poor roof pitch can accelerate this development. Glazed clay tiles have the ability to last a very long time, as all the dirt washes off. Even there, it's the lifespan of the underlayment that is crucial.

Our previous house had a relatively flat roof with sand-coated concrete tiles. In other words, the worst kind. It was over 40 years old. Although not beautiful anymore, it held up. We replaced it on the current house. I don't know how old the tiles were. But quite a few tiles were marked with a brickyard that burned down in the 1950s. The rest were probably older. It was largely flawless. (Anyone interested in buying old proven tiles. Hard-tested in real climate for over half a century) I probably should have looked for matching tiles. But the roofers persuaded me to replace the tiles.

Thankful for all the answers. Still feeling a bit torn, but leaning towards concrete tiles. Since the house has about a 38-degree slope and the veranda will have about a 15-degree slope. We have the forest as the nearest neighbor, so perhaps clay tiles might actually be the best. Quickly checked Byggmax and the price differs by 4:-per piece per tile when comparing clay/concrete.

Need to think a bit more, hehe

Does Byggmax not have black bricks?
