Does anyone know which is preferable, spraying plaster or applying plaster by hand? We won't be doing it ourselves, but would like to know which is preferred, i.e. which gives the best result in terms of appearance and durability.

Nowadays, spray plaster applied with a pump is most commonly used because it is the most efficient. You can also hand-apply this type of plaster, but it is a tough job. Spray plaster isn't entirely simple either, admittedly.

Optiroc told me that there isn't really a difference; it's just the labor effort that differs.

When you spray the plaster, you still have to smooth it out with a plaster float, so the final result still depends on how you smooth it before coloring.

OK, thanks for the answer. Does anyone possibly know the advantages/disadvantages of using pre-colored plaster compared to painting the plaster afterwards??

When applying new plaster, a colored finish render is preferred. It is slightly etching, allowing it to penetrate the layer underneath.

Therefore, you should protect windows and metal details; otherwise, you might get unsightly etching marks.

Pre-colored finish render lasts longer than paint.

Additionally, some pre-colored finish render contains a bit of dolomite/mica, so the house will shimmer a little after a few years - very stylish! You can buy mica/dolomite in bags if you want a significantly shimmering house. Check out old plastered houses; they often have mica in the finish render. New plastered houses are more matte.

Super thanks for your answers!! Now I can feel a bit more at ease! Our plaster will be colored from the start, so it feels good to know that it's not a completely wrong choice.....

I can even imagine saying that you have made a completely right choice. Good luck with the polishing.

You make it seem so easy... that not everyone does!? ;)

Handcrafted plastering is preferable to sprayed, in my opinion. You get a completely different surface on the plaster. But it is very important that the person doing it masters this technique because it is much more difficult and, as mentioned, a heavier job.

You should also consider what type of plaster you should have, silicate-based or silicone-based.

The silicone-based has more advantages over the other because:
- it "breathes" and is water-repellent.
- it is slightly elastic and can absorb a little, slight movements.
- does not "release" color when you touch the surface.
- does not fade much.
