Choice of materials? Drywall / spackle and paint?
I have bought a house built in 1960 that I am renovating. There is a room where I'm wondering what the best/easiest way to proceed is.
Since there are both stains and cracks in the wall, I'm thinking it might be as well to install drywall?
Is there a risk that they will also crack? Should I fill the cracks with spackle and then paint, but then have the risk that the cracks will return and be visible through the paint?

Looks like someone screwed chipboard onto a drywall.
I would have used renovation plasterboard (6mm). You don't need to do anything else to the surface other than cut away anything that sticks out.
You seem to have a ventilated skirting board, it is meant to allow air to move under the floor. So make sure not to block it...

The plan is to rent out the house indefinitely and will probably change the flooring in this room in a year or so. Therefore, I don't want to 'overwork' the house but at the same time want it to look decent. The goal is to renovate with the cheapest and quickest solution possible.

Thanks for the quick response! Well, the geothermal heating goes through the floor and out through the skirting boards. Never seen anything like it
So mounted the plasterboard as per the picture in the other room
